Contracts were extended with two firms doing business with Morenci Area Schools.
Board members voted Jan. 9 to renew contracts with Road Runr maintenance for custodial services through June 30, 2013, and also with T&R Total Lawn Care for lawn care services through June 30, 2013.
The board voted to accept a bid from Triple K/Cedric Kutzley for replacement of the board office roof, pending verification of insurance. The estimated cost is $4,275.
RETIREMENTS—The board accepted the retirements of food service personnel Mary McDowell and Ruth Ann Mansfield. McDowell’s position will be filled with a new employee and Mansfield will continue working through the school year. The board will later discuss her replacement.
AWARD—The district’s bus fleet was awarded a Certificate of Excellence from the Michigan State Police, noting a 100 percent pass rate for bus inspections.
Inspectors are very fussy, said school superintendent Dr. Michael Osborne, and complete compliance is quite an honor.
TERMS—The board will continue discussing whether to continue with four-year school board terms or switch to the only option allowed by the state—six-year terms.
Osborne said many districts are choosing the six-year format, however, that could discourage some people from seeking office, he said, because they don’t favor such a long term.
If Morenci stays with four-year terms, four of seven seats will expire at the same election.
COACHING—The board approved three volunteer coaching positions: Mary Bell, bowling; Darren Lemmon, boys basketball; and Joshua Denney, wrestling.
Joey Dubina was hired as an assistant baseball coach.
