Fire department urges parents to develop escape plan 2011.10.26

Last year Morenci Fire Department members spoke to elementary school students about the importance of smoke detectors. This year the talk turned to escape plans.

Fire department members visited with elementary school students Tuesday, urging them to sit down with their parents to create a plan to safely get out of their house in the case of fire.

“What we’re doing Tuesday won’t mean much without parents getting involved,” said fire department officer Jeff Ort last week. “Parents’ enthusiasm is essential.”

Fires with fatalities have occurred in Morenci, Ort said, and that might be prevented with good planning.

“It’s not a big, technical plan,” he said, but children need to know what to do if their house is on fire.

“The more everyone is familiar with the plan, the less panic there will be,” Ort said.

Children should be bringing material home from school. In addition, an advertisement on page 9 of this week’s Observer lists several guidelines to make a family prepared.
