Morenci's Labor Day Bridge Walk set 2011.08.17

Posted in 2011 August

It doesn’t take a long time to participate in Morenci’s annual Labor Day Bridge Walk.

The community’s answer to the famous walk across the Straits of Mackinac involves a much shorter bridge and speeches by visiting dignitaries are limited to just 60 seconds.

Walkers will travel across the historic truss bridge over Silver Creek on Labor Day morning. Those with the stamina can also stroll across the historic Van Wagner Bridge that carries traffic over Silver Creek.

Money raised from the sale of T-shirts for this year’s event will support Morenci’s Junior Garden Club and its efforts to beautify the downtown with large sidewalk planters. Many of the planters are in need of repair, replacing and painting.

Morenci Area Chamber of Commerce members set an Aug. 18 deadline for area businesses and organizations to sign up for sponsorship on the commemorative T-shirt. Contact city hall for details.

Look for additional information about this year’s bridge walk in the next two issues of the Observer.

CARDS—Chamber Discount Cards—offering special prices at area businesses—are now on sale for $5 each through the end of the year. Proceeds support the festival fireworks fund.

FACADES—Sept. 1 is the deadline for façade improvement grants through the Chamber. Up to $250 will available for pre-approved projects.

Applications should be taken to Leasa Slocum at city hall.
