Fayette seventh grade student Taylor Griffiths had to settle for fourth place at the national finals of the Elks Hoop Shoot free throw shooting contest.
Taylor won the state and regional championships to earn a free trip to Springfield, Mass., for the national contest. There she competed against 11 other 12- and 13-year-olds.
Kendall Cloninger of Dallas, N.C., repeated her regional performance with a perfect 25 for 25 at the finals to take the title.
A girl from Washington took second with 24 baskets out of 25 tries and a Missouri girl placed third with only two misses.
Taylor held steady with her regional score, sinking 22 of 25 attempts. She missed her final try during round one of 10 shots—as did everyone in the contest with the exception of the top two finishers—then got back on track in round two (15 shots) until her final two tries.
Everyone in her division followed the same pattern, other than the winner. Each participant had a string of baskets before missing a shot, in both rounds one and two. All of the misses came at the end of the rounds.
