Fayette Baloney will be celebrated Tuesday at the final program of the winter season at the Bean Creek Coffee House Series. The event is scheduled from 7 to 8:30 p.m. on the first floor of the Fayette Opera House.
The series offers a stage to any area performers who wish to share their talents with friends and neighbors in the informal atmosphere of the Bean Creek Coffee House. Following the coffee house tradition, guests are invited to share fresh-brewed coffee and sample a variety of refreshments while listening to music, poetry and prose.
For this program, refreshments will include baloney. To celebrate the local culinary legend, the evening program is titled “You’re Full of Baloney Night.”
During the middle of the last century, explained Tom Spiess of the Fayette Arts Council, Tule & Heckman Meats created what came to be known as Fayette Baloney. The mix of exotic ingredients created a unique flavor and the bologna was much sought after.
When Tule & Heckman closed, the Fiddler Brothers Meat Market carried on the tradition into the 1950s. Unfortunately, when Fiddlers closed, the recipe—or receipt, as it used to be called—disappeared.
“While several have tried to recreate the taste,” Spiess said, “none have succeeded in capturing that unique flavor.”
Local chefs are invited to showcase their own baloney-making skills in the first Bean Creek Baloney Challenge.
Guests are invited to bring their best hand-crafted bologna to the coffee house for judges to sample. Cheese and crackers will be provided to the judges and guests who choose to cast their vote in the “People’s Choice” category.
