Fulton County posts “snow emergency” rules to advise drivers during inclement weather, but each community in the county has its own designation.
Based on the recommendation of the police department and the village street department, the mayor is able to declare a snow emergency.
Fayette follows the same three levels posted by the county, but also includes a notice pertaining to parking in the downtown area.
“No Parking” signs are sometimes posted downtown by the police department to facilitate the removal of snow from parking spaces in front of businesses.
Property owners are reminded to avoid pushing snow from driveways into the street, where it can create a driving hazard.
Snow emergencies are announced on radio station 96.1 FM and on Channel 13 television. Announcements are also posted on the village website (www.villageoffayette.com) under announcements on the right side of the page.
The emergency levels are:
Level 1. Roadways are hazardous with blowing and drifting snow. Roads are icy. Drive cautiously.
Level 2. Roadways are hazardous with blowing and drifting snow. Only those who feel it is necessary to drive should be out on the roadways. Contact your employer to see if you should report to work.
Level 3. All roadways are closed to non-emergency personnel. No one should be out during these conditions unless it is absolutely necessary to travel. All employees should contact their employers to see if they should report to work. Those traveling on roadways may subject themselves to arrest.
