Lacy’s Petals and Gifts will close by the end of the year, and in the meantime, owner Sheila Thompson is cutting back on the hours the store is open.
Thompson opened the store on Morenci’s Main Street in May after moving items from her home in rural Clayton.
“I’ve done a lot of soul-searching in recent weeks,” Thompson said. “I would love to stay open, but I can’t afford the overhead.”
Thompson said the tough economy is making flowers a luxury item, even for weddings. The number of weddings seems to be down from the past, she said, and couples are making the arrangements themselves rather than hiring someone for consultation.
In August Thompson opened the Back Door Bargains consignment shop. She’s notifying those who brought items in to collect them. Anything left over will be given to a charitable organization.
Lacy’s is now open from noon to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.
