Dollar General construction to begin in Fayette 07.28.10

It’s just a field of soybeans now, but Fayette officials see it as their version of  the “field of dreams.”

Before long, construction will begin on a Dollar General store and the doors are expected to open in October.

Village administrator Amy Metz led a ground-breaking ceremony Sunday evening at the site on the west side of the village near the old Rorick House on Main Street.

Metz reminded the audience of the “if you build it, they will come” theme of the “Field of Dreams” movie starring Kevin Costner.

“We may not have Kevin Costner,” Metz said, “but we already know they’re here based on the traffic counts from U.S. 20 and State Route 66, which exceed 10,000 annually.”

Annual attendance at Harrison Lake State Park is estimated at 250,000, she added, suggesting there will be plenty of customers for the new store.

Mayor Ruth Marlatt explained the significance of using a hoe instead of the traditional shovel for breaking the ground.

“We like to do things a little differently here in Fayette,” she said.

During the village’s annual Bull Thistle Festival, the “Golden Hoe” award is presented to the person who brings in the best bull thistle.

Dollar General district manager Mickie Gregory announced the store is scheduled to open in October and 10 employees are expected to be hired.
