Six businesses were chosen to receive building exterior grants from the Morenci Area Chamber of Commerce.

Chamber members voted June 10 to give $250 grants to five Chamber members and a $200 grant to another.

Funds will be used for: Borchardt Brothers Market, painting and sign replacement; Philip Rubley, painting and awning repair; Morenci Skateland, installation of an awning; Lacy’s Petals and Gifts, sign replacement; Eagle Funeral Home, painting and carpeting on the outside ramp; Bell’s Tax Service, window signage.

EVENTS COMMITTEE—Trula McClain spoke about the lack of people downtown on Friday and Saturday nights and suggested that events should be planned, such as a street dance.

Morenci mayor Keith Pennington said he had been thinking of creating an events committee through city council. He said it’s a misconception that a large crowd of people is necessary to make an event a success.

Sheila Thompson, Trula McClain, Jennifer Blaker and Trisha Burrow volunteered to serve on a Chamber committee to develop ideas for events.

DONATIONS—Chamber members voted to donate $500 to the Town and Country Festival fireworks fund and to pay for a flag in the Kiwanis flag program display. The flag will be placed with others along Wakefield Park.

GARAGE SALE—Members voted to buy advertising for the annual city-wide garage sale July 17. The Chamber’s golf outing is scheduled Aug. 28 at De-Mor Hills.
