Much remains in a state of flux before Morenci’s schools open for the 2010-11 year. Board of education members met in a closed session Monday to discuss several proposed cost-saving measures.
Board president Scott Merillat announced before closing the meeting that the board would discuss a proposed retirement policy, an athletic director proposal, the middle school principal position and the school’s transportation system.
A special meeting was scheduled Tuesday night to discuss the retirement proposal in a public session and Superintendent Michael Osborne is expected to discuss the transportation issue at a special meeting June 22.
Finance director Erica Metcalf explained that several area districts participate in a collaboration of transportation services and Morenci’s board will examine the system and decide of they want to be involved.
COACHES—For the second month, board members tabled action on hiring all coaches below the head varsity coaches. Last month the hiring was tabled while approval was sought from head coaches for the positions serving under them.
Merillat said the issue was tabled again because proper documentation was not yet received from the head coaches.
GYM FLOOR—Buckeye Athletic Surfaces was hired to refinish the high school gymnasium floor at a cost of $3,127. The scheduled refinishing will follow completion of other work on the floor that’s covered by a warranty and will come at no cost to the district.
RESIGNATION—The resignation of elementary school paraprofessional Sandra Hilton was approved by the board.
