Wins were few and far between for the Bulldog wrestlers last week—at a double dual league meet and at the Clinton tournament.
They’re looking pretty good, but making a lot of young mistakes, said coach Scott Clark. His youthful team needs more mat time, he said, noting that last Wednesday’s matches were the first weekday dual meets of the season.
At Clinton’s Dave Elliott Invitational, freshman John Michael Martinez was the only Bulldog to place. He picked up just one win in the 125-pound class and came in sixth.
Martinez lost to a Clinton wrestler in his opener, but came back to score a 9-0 decision against an East Jackson wrestler. He dropped his next match 2-5 against a Michigan Center.
Jordan Bach (215) scored a pair of pins, but that wasn’t enough to place. He downed a Lee wrestler in 18 seconds and Michigan Center wrestler in 34 seconds.
Mitchell Schmucker scored a 13-11 win against Lee at 150 pounds. Ryan Whitaker had a 7-2 lead before he made a wrong move and was pinned.
Three Bulldogs were out of action for disciplinary reasons.
TCC—At Sand Creek last Wednesday, the Bulldogs fell to Clinton 64-15 and to Sand Creek 66-12.
Dustin Roller (130) scored a pin at 1:51 against Clinton and at 2:45 against Sand Creek.
Kyle Clegg (145) scored a pin at 1:02 against Clinton and Brandt Kelly (112) won a close decision, 7-6.
Martinez was the only other winner for the night, stopping his Sand Creek foe at 1:04.
