When former Morenci resident Dave Koyl saw the story about the rock (Nov. 4 Observer) with the strange markings—either Native American carvings or glacial scratchings—he knew it looked familiar. He was with Bud Lenfesty mushroom hunting when they came across the rock in 1975.
“We never did find any mushrooms that day, but we found a rock,” Dave said.
Dave had heard a story back when he lived here about a Native American burial mound in the area of the rock. The mushroom hunters associated the carved rock with the burial ground.
The MSU professor who commented about the rock might visit Stair Public Library in the future to present a program about Great Lakes Native American culture.
