Hudson to handle Morenci Area EMS billing 11.18.2009

Hudson’s ambulance service will now handle the billing for the Morenci Area EMS to save on costs. The change was approved by the EMS board Monday night.

Morenci has used the AccuMed billing service for several year, currently at a charge of $18 for each ambulance run.

“AccuMed has provided a valuable service over the years to bring stability to our billing process,” said Morenci Area EMS administrator Larry Weeks. “However, recently they proposed a dramatic increase in their fees that could be crippling to our operations.”

The proposed increase could cost up to$9,000 a year, Weeks said. He obtained bids from six other billing firms and he also spoke with other ambulance services about their operations. During the course of his conversations, he received an offer from Hudson EMS to provide the service for $15 a run.

Morenci Area EMS currently makes about 500 ambulance runs a year, Weeks said, and 360 to 380 of those are considered billable runs.

Weeks said Morenci Area EMS does not handle billing on its own due to the training demands needed for working with insurance companies.

“It’s a very complicated process,” he said, to keep up with current insurance codes.
