Morenci’s tree replanting effort will be aided by a $1,900 grant from the Michigan Department of Natural Resources Urban and Community Forestry Program.
The funds will be used to replace numerous trees along Page and Walnut streets that were lost due to the Emerald Ash Borer.
Morenci will contribute $3,206 of which $2,031 is “in-kind” funds for labor, benefits and equipment usage. The total project cost is listed at $5,106.
The awarded funds originated from the Community Forestry Grant Program, established by the United States Department of Agriculture Forest Service. No state funds were expended in this grant program. The program’s mission is to provide assistance to communities, schools and nonprofit organizations with urban forestry related activities.
Twenty-nine trees were removed recently, including 12 ashes. Twenty-five ashes are still in need of cutting.
