Braylon Stover is $1,500 richer and he owes it all to his mother, Laura.
Laura filled out a sweepstakes coupon during Stair Public Library’s Summer Reading Program this past July.
Braylon was one of six winners in a state-wide drawing sponsored by the Library of Michigan Foundation, the Michigan Education Savings Program and the Michigan Education Trust.
Because Laura carefully filled out the “Get Creative @ Saving for College” Sweepstakes coupon, her entry was accepted in the drawing. And because Braylon participated in Stair Public Library’s Summer Reading Program, the library won $1,000 for future reading programs.
“It was such an unexpected source of income in these awful economic times,” said library director Colleen Leddy.
“We had already lost about $4,000 in penal fines and state aid this summer compared to last year, so we were thrilled to receive this check,” she said, especially since the staff didn’t have to do anything but hand out the information about the state savings programs.
“And, even then, it was our wonderful VolunTeens who compiled the packets containing bookmarks, brochures and coupon postcards, and handed them out to all the children in the Summer Reading Program,” Leddy said.
“It was the most painless way to earn $1,000 and we are so grateful to the VolunTeens and all the parents who participated.”
Leddy hopes more parents participate in the sweepstakes next summer.
“The more entries submitted from Morenci, the better our chances are for winning again.”
