Former employees of the Morenci Area Hospital are invited to tour the facility at an open house Oct. 10.
Dianne Grieder made arrangements with ProMedica Health System to allow former employees to “reminisce and take a last look,” she said, before the facility meets the likely fate of demolition.
The open house is scheduled from 3 to 6 p.m. Oct. 10. Light refreshments will be served.
The hospital was built in 1961 to serve residents from Morenci, Fayette, Waldron and Lyons. Due to continuing financial difficulties, in-patient care ended in 1997 and closure of the emergency room soon followed.
The facility is still used for a physician’s office, physical therapy services and laboratory services. The senior citizens center is also located in the building.
ProMedica is preparing to move those services to the vacant Charles Fay Village building. ProMedica has offered to give the hospital to the city or to demolish the building if the city is not interested in taking ownership. City council members have not yet made a decision.
