Update on the Quiznos tale 8.05.09

Hunter Weeks, a member of the team that rode a Segway vehicle across America a few years back returned to Morenci on his next quest: Visiting 50 states in two weeks to promote the Quiznos Torpedo sandwich.

Hunter and his crew shot short vignettes in all 50 states. The Michigan portion was entirely in Morenci—an easy visit before moving on into Ohio and then east to log the top corner of the country.

Hunter was helping Quiznos promote a contest that ended last week. The best video entry for “Where do you Torpedo?” would win $10,000.

At the toastytorpedo.com website, all 89 submissions can be viewed, but you might want to stick with the top 10. There’s some really good, creative work there. Don’t miss “60 Seconds to the Moon” and “Special Delivery.”

“50 States – A Man and His Torpedo” shows his travels state by state in alphabetical order.

Many of the segments are in recognizable big cities, including Cleveland, Boston, New York City and San Francisco, or in many cases they’re out in the middle of nowhere.

For Morenci, it’s obvious because Hunter is walking onto the sidewalk—Torpedo in hand—with the Morenci Hair Shop sign in the background and the Liz Stella Annex of the library to the left.

The other video is called “50 States Torpedo Tour – An American Experience.”

Once again the states are presented alphabetically and when the show reaches Michigan, Brandon Correa and Tim Apger are sitting on the bleachers at Wakefield Park in their National Guard uniforms—the same scene that was shown in the Observer.

For the most interesting of Hunter’s presentations, go to YouTube.com and search for 50 States in 2 Weeks. Here you’ll find a photovideo called “Behind the Scenes.” The work is a compilation of 5,000 photographs put together by Hunter’s colleague Mike Hedge.

Morenci comes into view at about 3:12 of the eight-minute show. The photos flash by quickly and it’s deceiving how many there really are.

If you let the display run through and look carefully, you might guess there are a dozen photos shown, but you’re actually missing a lot. Stop and start the video repeatedly and more scenes show up.

You have to run through it several times to catch them all. There must be at least two dozen photographs taken here.

It starts off with a photo of someone taking a photo of the Quiznos toaster oven model perched on a fence post, with Morenci’s pedestrian bridge in the background.

Next comes a couple of shots with the “Welcome to Michigan” sign, photos of Brandon and Tim on the bleachers, the Observer editor talking with Hunter, Ron and Autumn Apger’s young son, Daniel, some scenes in front of Morenci Hair Shop and Mike Dion setting up the video camera with Morenci’s downtown in the background.

Next comes Morenci’s city clock in front of the library, Karma McVay sweeping up in the parking lot at the Deli, a few shots of maple leaves, walking through Stephenson Park with the Yenor house in the background, a crew member holding a sandwich out of a car window and two shots at the Ohio state line sign.

After a photo at the turnpike entrance, the scene jumps to Cleveland, leaving this town far behind.

You might call these episodes Morenci’s latest claim to fame. Well, it’s not a very large measure of fame, but we’ll take what we can get.
