A former Morenci resident has launched his bid to be elected a U.S. congressman.

Scott Aughney of Jackson, announced his candidacy for Michigan’s 7th district U.S. House of Representatives seat in the 2010 election cycle. The district includes the counties of Lenawee, Hillsdale, Branch, Jackson, Eaton, and portions  of Calhoun and Washtenaw.

Aughney describes himself as an independent conservative.

Aughney said he will operate his campaign as a grassroots candidate as he begins his petition drive to appear on the November 2010 ballot.

Aughney is a 1983 graduate of Morenci Area High School and has completed coursework at Jackson Community College and Adrian College, with an emphasis in biology. He believes his employment history in the food marketing and retail industry will give him a balanced perspective on supply economics and consumer shopping patterns, and give him insight into small business.

Details of Aughney’s platform can be found at the website www.aughneyforcongress.com. At the website district residents can volunteer to work on the campaign or make a financial contribution.

Aughney is interested in arranging “Meet the Candidate” events and other appearances during the petition drive.
