Concealed Carry class set in Fayette 7.1.09

Posted in 2009 July

Citizens interested in earning a CCW (carry concealed weapon) license will have the opportunity to learn from one of the best at a class scheduled July 18 in Fayette.

Evergreen High School graduate Linda (Reckner) Walker will return to Fulton County to teach the class. She recently earned the National Rifle Association’s Sybil Ludington Women’s Freedom Award for legislative activism, advocacy, volunteerism and education.

Walker serves as Central Ohio chair of the Buckeye Firearms Association and is a certified instructor for firearms classes. Her co-teacher is Archbold native Chad Baus.

The CCW training class—a requirement for obtaining a license—is often run over a two-day period, said Fayette police chief Jason Simon, but Walker will teach the class in one intensive session.

The class includes two hours on a firearms range.

“It won’t seem like 12 hours,” Walker said.

She and Baus lead an active, interesting class that will keep interest alive throughout the session.

A major portion of the class is the NRA’s basic pistol course, Walker said, including pistol and holster selection. After that comes Ohio’s concealed carry instruction.

She considers the “mind-set” part of the class as extremely important.

“It’s a huge responsibility to carry a firearm,” Walker said, and those who chose to do so must be mentally prepared to handle a situation in which self-defense is needed.

Students must be able to explain and demonstrate rules for safe gun handling and proper storage of handguns and ammunition; how to handle ammunition in a safe manner; the knowledge, skills and attitude necessary to shoot a handgun in a safe manner.

Chief Simon said that 30 students are needed to schedule the class and several more must sign up to insure the class will be taught in Fayette.
