A Morenci citizen whose community leadership spanned more than four decades has died at the age of 89.
Dr. Keith Whitehouse died Monday evening at the Lenawee Medical Care Facility in Adrian where he became a patient last month.
Dr. Keith, as he was known to families throughout the area, opened his medical practice in Morenci in 1946 after marrying his college sweetheart and Morenci native, Lorene Rupp. He served patients for 37 years before retiring and leaving the office he operated with Dr. R.A. Diccion.
He was a charter member of the Morenci Kiwanis Club and was instrumental in the construction of Morenci Area Hospital, a facility serving patients from Lyons to Waldron and south to Fayette.
In addition to playing an active role in many community activities, he was well known for his musical skills and the Dixieland jazz band that he led.
Upon his retirement in 1983, Dr. Whitehouse said that he never regretted the move to Morenci, a community he saw as an excellent place to work and raise a family.
A memorial service is planned at 11 a.m. Friday at Morenci’s First Congregational Church.
