Two Morenci Equations teams earned first-place honors at the county tournament this month.
Forty-one teams competed in three age groups, with three divisions in each.
A middle school team placed first in Div. C of the fifth/sixth grade group. Team members were Torin Merillat, Danny Hunt, Alex Decker, Megan Spencer and Adam Gillen.
The team of Gabi Acuña, Emily Schmidt, McKenzie Hilton, Courtney Moore and Austin Sandusky placed second in Div. A.
In Div. B, Cody Tule, Sydney Weeks, Wyatt Mohr, Brooke Baumgartner and Hunter Borton placed third.
Other students participating were Chloe Molitierno, Mitchell Gallup, Brett Mohr, Melissa Burk, Shannon Jarrell, Korin Baumgartner, Emma Binegar, Colin Smith, Demi Powers and Mariah Gillen.
A Morenci Area High School team earned first place in Div. B of the high school competition. Participants were Phoenix Duncan, Jimmy Wright, Jade Pfund, Tommy McVay, Corey Williams, Matea Garcia, Hannah Binegar, Elaina Pruzinsky, Meghan Smith, Megan Cox, Dylan McVay and Adam Barnett.
Equations is a math game developed by a professor from the University of Michigan, explained middle school coach Beth Wright. The game uses all the basic arithmetic operations in order to set goals and solutions (equations and answers). The game requires strategy, thinking skills and basic math computation.
Practice tournaments begin in October and end in May with the Super Tournament.
Other schools participating this year were Sand Creek, Adrian, Tecumseh, Addison, Onsted and Madison.
