Fayette book group to meet 5.13.09

Posted in 2009 May

The Thursdays @ 7:00 Book Discussion Group will meet May 28 to discuss “Three Cups of Tea: One man’s mission to fight terrorism and build nations...one school at a time” by Greg Mortenson and David Oliver Relin.

After a failed attempt to climb K2—the world’s deadliest mountain peak—left Greg Mortenson broken in body and spirit, he was nursed back to health by the people of an impoverished village in Pakistan’s Karakoram Himalaya. He promised that he would return one day to build them a school.

Although Mortenson was a homeless “climbing bum” living out of his Buick in Berkeley, Calif., he sold what few possessions he had to launch a humanitarian campaign to build the school.

The book traces Mortenson’s decade-long journey to build schools throughout the region that gave birth to the Taliban and sanctuary to al Qaeda. While he wages war with the root causes of terrorism, poverty and ignorance by providing boys and girls with a balanced, non-extremist education, Mortenson survives a kidnapping, death threats from Americans who consider him a traitor, and separation from his family.

Extra copies of the book are available at the circulation desk. For more information about the book group, call the Normal Memorial Library at 237-2115.
