Tickets are available for the seventh annual dinner and auction to benefit the Morenci Education Foundation. This year’s event is scheduled at 5:30 p.m. Saturday, May 9, in the high school cafeteria. The catered meal will feature prime rib and Italian chicken.
Recipients of this year’s Distinguished Alumni Award are Larry Gould, Class of 1961; Kathye Phelps-Herrera, Class of 1967; Dwight Mansfield, Class of 1968; and Timothy Kruse, Class of 1977.
The event has traditionally been dedicated in honor of an individual or couple who has made a significant impact on the Morenci community and local school system. This year the honored couple is James and Patsy Barrett.
Profits from the dinner and auction benefit the Morenci Education Foundation scholarship fund. Nearly $40,000 has been awarded to Morenci Area High School graduates as a result of previous benefits, and the Foundation directors are hoping to raise funds to award students generous scholarships again this spring.
New auction items this year include an elegant candlelight dinner for up to eight adults, an autographed Detroit Lions football, decorating help for the holidays, and an MSU Spartans coat.
Other items include a full-size quilt donated by Bill Van Valkenburg, crocheted tablecloth doily by Carma Sutton, crocheted afghans by Dorothy Dunten, custom wood pieces by Howard and Susie Tew and a park bench by Roth Fabricating. Auction items are still arriving and donations are welcomed.
Tickets cost $25 per person or $40 per couple and must be purchased by May 2. Tickets are available at the Morenci branch of United Bank and Trust. To make a reservation, send an e-mail to [email protected], and payment may be made at the door when tickets are picked up.
