CROSS WALK: When Our Lady of Mercy church members gather this week for their annual Good Friday cross walk, they won’t face quite the same rigors as last year.
In 2008, nearly 20 people joined in the walk from the south shelter at Harrison Lake State Park into Fayette in the midst of the season’s biggest snowstorm.
It might be raining this time around, but snow isn’t in the forecast.
There are usually about 30 people who make the five-mile “Walk for Life.” Participants can take a turn carrying the large cross made by Ron Eisel. The group stops at the home of Willie and Lucy Rodriguez for a lenten lunch along the way. Food is donated by parishioners.
Members of the church youth group organize the event, and they make up the bulk of the walkers, but everyone is invited to join in and reflect during their time on the road.
“We walk as a sign of respect for life and for the One who gave us life,” said church youth leader Anita Van Zile.
She’ll miss this year’s walk since she will be on a mission trip in the Dominican Republic. Eisel will be in charge of the event, which begins at 11 a.m. on Good Friday.
MORENCI SERVICE: The Morenci Ministerial Association will sponsor two Good Friday services this year.
A service is planned at 2 p.m. at the First Congregational Church, located at the corner of N. Summit and Locust streets. A second service is scheduled at 7 p.m. at the Church of the Nazarene, located at the corner of N. Summit and Coomer streets. Both services are open to the public.
Proceeds from offerings at both services will benefit the Morenci Ministerial Association Food Pantry.
MEDINA EGG HUNT: Easter eggs by the thousands await young hunters Saturday at the Medina Federated Church annual egg hunt.
Thousands of candy-filled eggs will be ready for children age 12 and under. The hunt begins at 1 p.m. Easter baskets will also be given away and the public is invited to join in.
In addition to the egg hunt and refreshments, special guest Jim Barron—a gospel illusionist from WBCL—will perform for children.
The Medina Federated Church is located at 12603 Medina Rd. in Medina.
CLAYTON SERVICES: The Clayton United Methodist Church choir will perform the cantata, “Grace That Amazes,” at 7 p.m. on Maundy Thursday, April 9, at the church. The public is invited to join in this Holy Week celebration of word and song.
An Easter sunrise service is scheduled at 7:30 a.m. Sunday, with the theme, “What puzzles you about Easter?”
Many people have questions regarding the resurrection of Jesus Christ, and those questions will be addressed during the sermon. A time of worship and singing is also planned.
The Clayton United Methodist Church women’s group will serve breakfast following the service.
The public is welcome to attend.
