For anyone thinking of serving in city government, 2009 is a good year to give it a try. This year’s election will feature three options.
First, the mayor’s seat expires this year. Doug Erskin’s two-year term is up in November. Erskin was elected in November 2007 after defeating long-time mayor Russ Sutherland.
The regular four-year terms expire for three council members. Keith Pennington was appointed to council in 1997 and has been elected to office since then. Tracy Schell was elected to a full four-year term in 2005. Greg Braun was appointed to council in February 2008 to fill vacancy.
Jason Cook was appointed to council in October 2008 to fill a vacancy. He will seek election to complete that office—a commitment of two years.
Candidates must be registered voters of the City of Morenci for at least one year prior to the election. Nominating petitions must be signed by at least 25 qualified electors, with a filing deadline on May 12.
If a large number of candidates file for office, the field will be narrowed at the Aug. 4 primary election. The annual general election is scheduled Nov. 3.
