Book chosen for Fayette group 3.11.09

Posted in 2009 March

What should have been the happiest day of their lives became an unsettling time for Dana and Hugh Clarke, featured in Barbara Delinski’s 2007 novel, “Family Tree.” The book is the next selection for the Thursdays @7 discussion group at Fayette’s Normal Memorial Library.

Hugh Clark is from an old New England family that traces its roots to passengers on the Mayflower. Dana has a clouded past since she never met her father.

Dana gives birth to a beautiful, healthy baby, but the Clarkes can’t help but notice the distinctive African-American features of their child.

Much to Dana’s shock, Hugh begins to think that people will suspect his wife of having had an affair. He wants a paternity test to clear the air. He wants to track down Dana’s father to see if he explains their  dilemma.

Dana begins a journey through her past that unearths family secrets rooted in fear and prejudice.

Delinski’s novel is described as asking penetrating questions about race, families and the choices people make in times of crisis.

The book discussion is scheduled at 7 p.m. March 26 at the library. The public is welcome to attend, either to discuss the book or just to listen to others.

Extra copies of the book are available at the library.
