High school band plans performance in the dark 10.15.08

It’s a double concert night for the Morenci Area High School band.

First under the lights during the half-time of the Morenci-Sand Creek football game; then without the lights when the game is over.

“We will be doing a show in the dark where we turn off the lights and do the half-time show with glow sticks instead of real light,” said band director Jamie DeVoe.

Football fans won’t be completely left in the dark. Members of the high school Volunteer Club will be on hand with flashlights to guide fans out of the bleachers and toward the lighted parking areas.

The idea for the glow stick concert emerged from the group’s practice sessions that lasted until dark. Mr. DeVoe told band members they did a good job playing in near darkness. Someone suggested a night concert and the idea of glow sticks was brought up.

Band members have the music memorized so they don’t really need light, but they’ll attached glow sticks to outline their bodies or instruments, plus the drumsticks.

The band will perform three pieces by Carlos Santana: “Black Magic Woman” (with a trumpet solo by Nate Grieder), “Oye Come Va” and “Smooth.”

Band members will also sell glow sticks during the game to promote the event and add to the atmosphere for the show.
