Why am I here?

As organizers of the “40 Days of Purpose” campaign see it, that is life’s most important question.

When Morenci First Baptist Church launches its 40 Days effort at 6:30 p.m. Saturday, it will join a worldwide network of thousands of other churches that have examined the basic question through this spiritual growth campaign.

First Baptist pastor Ned Newlin said an estimated 30,000 churches around the world have investigated the “why am I here?” question inspired by California pastor Rick Warren in his book, “The Purpose Driven Life.”

Pastor Newlin proposed the idea for the campaign to his congregation and he was encouraged by the positive response. He’s hoping to draw the interest of area residents beyond his own church members.

“This campaign is not just for the members of Morenci First Baptist Church,” he said. “We see it as an opportunity to impact those of the whole community who desire to know more about ‘what on Earth am I here for?’ and discover real meaning for their lives and a higher purpose than personal peace and happiness.”

Planning continues for home group activities and weekly services throughout the campaign that will end Nov. 9.

The program focuses on five aspects of purpose: worship, fellowship, discipleship, ministry and evangelism.

Following the kickoff service Saturday, the program involves a weekly message by the pastor, personal or family daily devotional reading, a weekly scripture verse for memorization and weekly small group events.

“People will hear about God’s purpose for their lives in many different formats,” Pastor Newlin said. “This will allow for the truths to sink deeper into hearts, which is essential for any permanent change.”
