Morenci city council 9.17

Posted in 2008 September

Morenci city council members tabled a request last month to allow a farmer’s market in a city parking lot. At the meeting Sept. 8, council learned that an existing ordinance already covers the issue.

An ordinance governing the seasonal sale of items requires a $25 fee.

Anyone interested in setting up a booth for the sale of produce should contact city supervisor Barney Vanderpool.

HALLOWEEN—Trick-or-treat time in Morenci is scheduled from 6 to 8 p.m. on Halloween, Oct. 31.

DONATION—Michigan Gas Utilities Corp. donated $200 to the city for downtown beautification. A portion of last year’s donation was used to plant trees in the new parking lot behind Borchardt Brothers Market.

Council voted 5-0 to donate the money to the Morenci Garden Club to help with the annual flower basket project in the downtown.

Greg Braun and Leasa Slocum were absent from the meeting.

FLEXIBLE SPENDING—Council voted to approve a flexible spending account for employees. This can be used to create a health savings account funded with pre-tax dollar value.

BUSINESS—Judy Ward, representing the Domestic Manufacturers Association, urged council members to take a stand in support of strong trade policies to address overseas job losses.

She suggested contacting legislators.
