Former Morenci mayor Walt Teeter dies 8.13

Posted in 2008 August

The decision to build a hospital in Morenci to serve Waldron, Fayette, Lyons and the area led to Walt Teeter’s arrival here.

Teeter, his wife and three children moved to Morenci in 1961, beginning an era of community service spanning several decades.

Teeter died Aug. 6 at home following a lengthy illness.

Teeter was on hand to open the 25-bed facility in 1961 and oversee the 12-room addition in 1968 as the need for expansion arose.

In 1987, when no one was stepping forward to serve as Morenci mayor, Teeter agreed to serve if elected by write-in ballots and he garnered the most votes. After a two-year term, he hoped someone would step forward to serve, but no one did and he was elected by write-in votes again.

In 1993, Teeter was back in city hall when he was appointed a city council member.

Working with his wife, Mary, Teeter compiled records from Morenci’s two cemeteries and created a website for public access to the data.

His obituary is on page four of this week’s Observer.
