Art classes scheduled in Fayette 6.11

Posted in 2008 June

A series of three art classes are scheduled in Fayette this summer and others might follow.

The first class is scheduled tonight (Wednesday) and two others begin later in June.

“We’re going to see how the response is,” said Rebecca Loveless, who’s helping organize the classes. “If it’s good, we’ll probably add other classes.”

GOURDS—West Unity resident Marilyn Royal presents a class from 7 to 9 p.m. tonight on decorative gourd design for anyone of age 12 and up. The cost is $10.

Royal’s work with painted gourds has gained a lot of attention in the area, Loveless said.

DRAWING—A drawing class begins next week and continues for three Tuesdays, under the direction of Fayette resident Debbie Storrs.

She will teach the grid method of drawing to students 12 years and older. The class runs from 7 to 9 p.m. on three nights for a cost of $45.

MASKS—Frank Torres of Defiance is offering a mask-making class in which participants will make a plaster cast of their faces, then paint and decorate the mask.

The class is for students of age 10 and up and is scheduled from 10 a.m. until noon on Saturday, June 21 and 28. The cost is $25.

All classes are scheduled in the former Sun Drug store in downtown Fayette at 101 N. Fayette St., just west of the Opera House.

Samples of the techniques to be taught are on display in the windows of the store.

Although there’s no time to register for tonight’s gourd class—just show up if interested—Loveless urges students to call ahead to help with planning. She can be contacted at 419/237-3091.

Anyone interested in teaching a class should call to discuss the possibility.

Scheduling intergenerational classes is part of an effort to form an artist’s cooperative in the building, drawing people from the surrounding areas to offer studio space and a gallery.
