The Morenci Board of Education bid farewell to long-time board member Merton Easler Monday night.

Easler, who has served on the board for the past 15 years, announced his resignation because he has moved out of the district.

“When Mert talked, people listened,” said superintendent of schools Kyle Griffith. “He had a way of calming things down and changing direction when things got heated.”

“Merton looked out for every single kid in this district, not just his own,” Griffith added. “He and his experience will be missed.”

Griffith also praised the “Vote Yes” committee for all the work they did to help get the recent bond issue passed.

He was also pleased with the voters in the community for passing the bond.

“When push comes to shove, the community stands behind the schools,” he said. “We went to community members at one of the toughest economic times we’ve seen, and they came through for the kids.”

BAND TRIP—Board members approved a high school band trip to Chicago scheduled March 27 to 29, 2009.

RESCHEDULED—The regular June meeting has been rescheduled for 7 p.m. THURSDAY, June 19.
