Jason Simon hired as Fayette chief 3.5

Fayette village council members didn’t have to travel far to find a new police chief. Council voted Thursday to offer the job to Sgt. Jason Simon and he accepted the position.

Simon joined the Fayette Police Department in 1995 as a full-time officer. He was promoted to sergeant in January 1999 and has served as an acting chief since Rick Kline retired in October 2007.

The next step, said Fayette mayor Anita Van Zile, is to hire a full-time officer to work with Chief Simon. Patrols are currently filled by part-time officers.

Filling the vacant village administrator position isn’t going as fast as expected, Van Zile said, but she wants council to take its time in selecting the right candidate.

Thirteen applications were received for the job and 10 candidates were chosen for interviews.

Council was scheduled to meet Tuesday to choose applicants to bring back for a second round of interviews.
