Morenci council still looking for replacement 1.30.08

Morenci city council members are still searching for a replacement for the seat vacated by Jason Bryant.

Only one resident has expressed an interest in filling the vacancy, but council took no action in making the appointment.

At the Jan. 14 meeting, councilors voted to table action on appointing a new member, and when the vote came up to remove the issue from the table, council member Tracy Schell voted “no.” Dick Hewitt was absent from the meeting.

Art Erbskorn made a motion to appoint Carl VanDeWalker, the only person to apply for the position, but no one seconded his motion.

“What else should we do to fill the seat?” asked councilor Keith Pennington.

“We need to fill that spot,” answered mayor Doug Erskin. “We need to look for more interested parties.”

A decision was made to post an advertisement in the Observer with a cutoff date of Feb. 21.

VanDeWalker, who was in the audience, asked, “What problem is it with me that I can’t be put on council?”

Pennington and Schell said there were statements made during VanDeWalker’s interview with council about his past employment history that made them wary. Leasa Slocum added that she didn’t like his statement about how ideally Morenci would have no rental units.
