Police seeking information relating to chase 1.9

Posted in 2008 January

A police chase from Wauseon to Morenci last Wednesday left officers without the fleeing driver and puzzled over a hit-and-run incident.

A vehicle was stopped in Wauseon for a registration check at 4:40 p.m. Jan 2, but after the police officer made verbal contact, the driver sped off.

The Wauseon officer and a Fulton County Sheriff’s Department officer both pursued the vehicle and eventually ended up in Morenci, where officer Don Thompson became involved in the chase.

The fleeing driver sped along several Morenci residential streets, but officers were unable to block his travel. He struck a vehicle at the intersection of Elm and East Street South as he was heading south out of town and back into Ohio.

When the Wauseon officer realized the woman driving the other vehicle was not injured, he continued with the pursuit.

The fleeing driver apparently turned off State Route 108 onto a county road and escaped. The Wauseon officer then notified Morenci about the crash, but Officer Thompson was unable to locate the victim. So far, the accident has not been reported.

The fleeing driver was recognized by the Wauseon officer as a 27-year-old male from Fayette and charges are pending.

Morenci police are seeking information about the accident at Elm Street for possible prosecution of the Fayette driver. Morenci police chief Larry Weeks said the car received minor damage.

Anyone with information should call the Morenci Police Department at 458-7104.
