Some art students draw pretty things. Others create...something else.
And what exactly is that? Well, it’s different, says Morenci senior Brittani Wilson.
“It’s not the style that most people do,” she said, trying to describe the work that four students are showing in the Stair Public Library Annex.
The four are calling the show “Out of the Box.”
Don’t expect cheery flowers and trees. You’re more likely to find faces—either in a cartoony animine style or something bordering on the grotesque.
Their collection on display ranges from pen and ink to felt marker and collage.
Most of the work stems from regular class projects, said high school art teacher Kym Ries, but with a different twist.
That’s because the four girls tend to approach assignments with a different perspective.
“If there was a boring assignment,” Wilson said, “we would find a way to make it interesting.”
The themes they choose arise from their experiences, explained Karley Schmidt, a junior.
Ideas sometimes come from a television show or a movie, added junior Paige Ramsey, pointing out a drawing by Schmidt that came to her after watching “Casanova.”
Wilson reels off the names of half a dozen movies that she incorporated into one drawing.
A lot of ideas spring from random thoughts, she said.
“Whatever pops out,” Wilson added.
Schmidt said that some kids in class approach assignments with a different frame of mind.
“They don’t express what’s inside,” she said.
Mrs. Ries often views the group as walking art. Schmidt’s black lace dress, for example, isn’t a style shared by many of her classmates.
“You really live the art,” Mrs. Ries tells the group while working on the library display.
“It’s different from accepted standards,” Wilson said—a statement that covers both their art and their lifestyle.
“Once we know the rules, we break them,” Schmidt adds.
