Dennis Donahue 5K results 9.12

Uncommon success.

That’s the only way to describe the result of this year’s Dennis Donahue Memorial “Trot for a Track” run/walk in Lyons Aug. 26.

This year’s $32,000 profit was unusual, explained organizer Karen Donahue, because of a sizable private donation, although she wouldn’t mind at all if that became commonplace every year.

Last month’s run was only the second year of the annual event. The initial effort brought in $25,000 to help pay for the new running track at Evergreen High School.

The track was dedicated Friday at Evergreen’s home football opener and is open for public use. That helps meet another focus of the project—promoting a heart-healthy lifestyle.

Organizers of the run have committed to providing $25,000 a year to pay for the new track, bleachers and concession stand.

Karen Donahue was delighted with the results of this year’s run.

“It’s excellent for a small town,” she said.

Among the 500 participants, 320 took part in the 5K run. The top three male runners were Billy Neri of Riga (17:26), Benjamin Mack (18:54) and Zach Phillips of Morenci (19:07).

The top female runners were Janell Toth (21:37), Melanie Brock of Swanton (22:18) and Karen Donahue of Lyons (22:32).

Participants ranged from age three to 79. Those who completed the 5K ranged from four to 72.
