A wet chemise contest?
That ought to attract a few new guests to this year’s Thistle Ridge Civil War event in Fayette this weekend.
It’s true, says Jana Beaverson, an organizer of the annual reënactment event, women will compete in a wet chemise contest at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, but she’s not saying ahead of time just how the competition will proceed. You’ll have to come and see.
There are several other events on the schedule to offer amusement, such as the frying pan toss at 10:30 Saturday morning and the speed shooting contest at 11, when participants match their skills at firing and reloading muzzleloaders.
A kids’ drill is scheduled in the afternoon where kids can choose a wooden replica gun from a crate of play weapons and practice marching drills.
A vintage baseball game is scheduled, with the Wood County Infirmary Inmates taking on a pickup team among the visiting soldiers.
A baked goods auction is on the agenda Saturday afternoon. Beaverson will bake gingerbread following Mrs. Robert E. Lee’s recipe and pies will be baked in Dutch ovens over campfires.
Don Stiriz’s copper kettle will be transported to the battle site for soup as Beaverson cleans out her freezer. Ladies from the 21st Ohio Civilian Reënactors will feed troops throughout the weekend.
It’s a growing event, Beaverson said. The first year drew only about 35 soldiers and last season’s group numbered just over 50.
As of Saturday, said Tom Spiess, another organizer, the fourth annual battle this year has 95 registered from seven reënactment groups.
Battles will represent the Miller Cornfield fight at Antietam and the Hornet’s Nest event at the Battle of Shiloh.
The original 21st Ohio Volunteer Infantry drew residents from this part of the state, Beaverson said, as Pres. Lincoln called for troops after the firing on Fort Sumner. The volunteers served a 90-day commitment before returning home. Many ended up reënlisting.• The Thistle Ridge events are scheduled in the fields and woods north of the swimming pool and water treatment plant in Fayette.
