When Drew Morgan heard the promotion for the Call-Sam Sports KidKaster Contest, he knew it was something he wanted to enter.
Drew, 13, is now one of five finalists in the competition and he’s looking for votes to help him win. His grandparents, Adam and Gail Johnson of Morenci, are hoping some votes will come from Observer readers.
To enter the contest, youths between the ages of 10 and 14 were required to create a one-minute video presentation to tell why they should be the winner.
The contest sponsor—the Sam Bernstein Law Firm—narrowed the entries down to just five. The winner will be determined by popular choice and voters have through Sept. 12 to cast their ballot on-line.
Drew used his brother Adam’s Tigers Room to create his video. That way he could point to the special map on the wall and mention that he’s visited half of all the big league stadiums in America. He added that no matter where he travels, the Tigers’ Comerica Park is his favorite place to be.
The winner will have the opportunity to interview the Tiger of their choice and Drew’s video explained that would be the team’s new relief pitcher, Duane Below, who played high school ball just a few miles from Drew’s home.
The KidKaster winner will also have the chance to shadow a game reporter during the on-field pre-game segment of the broadcast, and to visit the press box.
For Drew, the contest is more than just a chance to visit with Below. He’s serious about a career in broadcasting, and not just any form of broadcasting.
“Definitely a sports broadcaster,” he said.
One week this past summer Drew attended a session of the Play By Play Sports Broadcasting Camp in Los Angeles.
“It was awesome,” Drew said.
He’ll get additional experience behind a microphone this fall when he serves as the announcer at Tecumseh High School volleyball games.
Until he achieves his dream of announcing major league games, he’ll continue doing what other broadcasters-to-be sometimes do: Turn down the volume on the TV and let the imaginary fans know what’s going on.
