2013.03.20 Jeanne Hinkley: Disappointed with lack of coverage

I was so disheartened by your recent article on the State Powerlifting competition. My son Christopher took first place but was barely mentioned at the end of the article and not even highlighted like all the other lifters who didn't even place. Angrily I called your office looking for answers, where I was told it was because Chris went to LCS and your paper didn't cover LCS sports.

It is true that Chris wisely took an opportunity given him to switch to LCS in February of this year; however, he did not lift for LCS, he lifted for Morenci where he has attended school for years now.

This answer seemed so ignorant that I was enraged and then told in an effort to calm me that coach Hoffman had said Chris was no longer on the team. Upon further investigation I found this cop-out to be entirely untrue. I asked at that time how could my son win a medal for a team he was no longer a part of. I was unable to attain any answer to explain this.

It is my opinion that your staff went to great lengths to purposely exclude Chris. Then tried to bail responsibility with pathetically weak excuses in defense. Chris will continue to lift for Morenci Powerlifting throughout his high school career. He will continue to win medals and will be recognized by many. But not apparently by our own local paper for reasons that are beyond my comprehension. I wish you all could see what a blow this was for a 15 year old boy who works so very hard at excellence.

Morenci

Editor's note: Coach Dan Hoffman explained to us that Chris registered for the state finals as a Lenawee Christian School student—not as a Morenci student. It would have been illegal for him to represent a school where he is not enrolled. It’s true that the Observer does not cover the activities of LCS students nor do we report on Morenci students who attend other schools in the area. We did, however, mention Chris’s state championship effort.
