2012.07.25 Lanny Simpkins: Turbines have a good side

Written by David Green. Posted in Letters

I am writing because there is so much anti-propaganda about windmills, and nothing about the good side of them. The antis will say there isn’t anything good. I have been following the wind farm in the Paulding and Van Wert area. To me, they are majestic.

The anti people stretch the truth on a lot of things like roads, taxes and pictures of windmills right in backyards, which isn’t so. At the right angle, it appears that it is, but when you drive by the house you see it’s way out in the field.

I was in Paulding in March and the roads are repaved and it’s not like the anti people are saying it is.

The wind blows about every day, so why not harness it. They say we have to look at the monster and stand around and wait for the wind to blow. It takes as little as eight miles an hour to spin the prop and there are very few days the wind doesn’t blow that much.

They say the sound is deafening. My nephew and I were down there and I drove out a service drive and was within eight feet of the windmill. When we were out of the car the two of us could hardly hear it running.

Flicker. Probably if they have a ceiling fan they get more flicker from that. But I suppose if you run over a raccoon in the road you’re going to quit driving a car.

I can’t believe that the windmills are all that bad and yet so many people still put them on their land. Paulding, Van Wert, Alma, Fayette schools and now Pettisville and Archbold schools have them. In regard to the person in Fayette, if that windmill was that loud, I would think the students would have a hard time studying because they are a lot closer to it. And why would Archbold and Pettisville go ahead and put windmills up?

After going to the Legion, it is clear that the anti people don’t want to hear anything in favor of windmills. That’s why I hope the voters of Seneca Township think for themselves when they vote instead of believing something they read hanging on their mailboxes.
