The pictures of Clark Gas and Lighting brought back memories.
My dad, Wells Collar worked for Clark’s Gas Heating and Lighting. It was located west of where the Video Connection was.
I don’t know when he started there, but he retired from there in 1946 or 1947. He and another man (Jason Carncross) used to install underground tanks for the gas. Some of the older homes here probably still have the old gas lines in the walls, and maybe the tanks are still in the ground.
I don’t know what all his jobs were, but I remember in the winter, going on Sunday afternoons with him while he checked on the heat in the buildings.
I don’t know anything about how the gas was produced, but Mr. Clark used to sit at a desk in the front of the building that faced Main Street. After Clark’s went out of business, the buildings were sold and a factory went in. Eventually they had a fire and the front building (or buildings) burned. I believe what is left of the place belongs to Walkers now.
