I have been reading with great interest the steps that the Morenci city council has been taking in regards to improving rental/land contract properties in the city, and thank you for the coverage.
I will follow both the Council’s and Observer’s lead, and not mention any names, but we all have one of “those houses,” owned by “that person” on our street. A Morenci homeowner can count himself fortunate if there’s only one on their street.
I have owned my home for approximately seven years and have watched with both humor and dismay at the revolving tenants in the large ramshackle house across the street. I’ve lost count of the number of people that have moved in and out—some quite quickly—over the course of those seven years. Some have been quiet, decent, and respectful of the neighbors around them, and some have not.
While it is unfair to judge these temporary neighbors based on their financial position, it is NOT unfair to judge the actual owner of the decaying house across the street. Not only do I commend the City Council for finally taking action to bring this individual into compliance with housing codes, I would ask the City Council to sue this individual for the cost of demolition of any structures that fail to comply, or are not brought up to code after found non-compliant.
