2011.05.18 Cathy Williams: Outraged by board's decision

Attention all Morenci Area School Alumni. Have you heard about the new principal hired by our school hiring committee? Kay Johnson applied for this job and was not even given a second interview. I am outraged! This woman has given 37+ years to this school system and community. She has helped to shape the lives of many of us, including myself and my children. You could never find a more compassionate, caring, giving person on earth! She has dedicated her life to shaping and molding the youth in Morenci Schools for over three generations, and this is the thanks and respect we give her?

I know that they were probably looking for someone to be here more than five years, but how do we know that the new hire, Mrs. Campbell, will stay? Morenci is very small compared to Jonesville. I am not saying we have nothing to offer, but with Kay we know what we have. Also, are we not trying to save money because of cutbacks in the state funding? It is my understanding that hiring Kay would have saved the district $70,000 a year. So instead of being loyal to a top qualified candidate who has held the position in the past, we go with a candidate that is not quite finished with the schooling it takes nor has had the experience that Kay would have brought. Our children respect her, have always respected her, and she respects them.

I really thought that sharing a superintendent with Hudson was a wise decision, to save money, but now I see that bringing in an “outsider” was not a wise decision.

In closing, I would like to apologize to you, Kay Johnson, my very good friend, my role model, and the one I entrusted with the education of my children. I am sorry that all the years of dedication to the youth of this school district was just thrown back in your face. And remember, students of Morenci Area Schools, there is always Schools of Choice.
