2011.02.02 Keith Pennington: Are snowmobiles on their way out in Morenci?

Written by David Green. Posted in Letters

Consistent snow cover seems to have brought out more snowmobiles this year and more importantly has brought out additional complaints from property owners. The city’s current snowmobile ordinance allows for riding from the owner’s residence on the street side of the curb to the nearest city limits at five miles per hour or less.

Unfortunately, a few disrespectful riders may necessitate a ban on all snowmobile traffic within the city limits. Some riders are speeding and riding through private property. Would those of you who are doing this consider driving your car across someone’s yard to get out of town? Would you consider trying to outrun law enforcement in your automobile? I hope not.

Regardless, the council has been asked to consider a ban on riding snowmobiles within the city limits. We will take up the matter at our February 14th meeting. If anyone would like to comment in favor of the proposal or against, please write a letter, contact your councilman or bring your sweetheart to the next council meeting and let your opinions be known.
