2011.01.05 Mike McDowell: Disappointed with hiring process

I would like to congratulate Mr. Wallace on his selection as the head football coach at Morenci. His qualifications and potential to lead the football program are outstanding and without question.

What I do question is the manner in which the selection was carried out. After 32 years of teaching, and 31 years of coaching football at both the JV and varsity levels, I thought that I might at least be extended the professional courtesy of an interview for the head football coaching position. I was not.

What was extended to me in a telephone conversation with Superintendent Osborne was the following general scenario. At a special board meeting during the holiday break, Mr. Wallace was interviewed for the job. After the interview it was apparently deemed unnecessary to interview myself or another possible candidate. Mr. Wallace was then voted on and approved.

I have to believe the board could have interviewed two more candidates out of respect, and then still selected Mr. Wallace if he was who they wanted. I am not communicating with you because of bitterness, but of disappointment.

I want to say thank you to the many people who offered me words of support when learning I was applying for the job. It meant a lot.
