OK. It’s time for me to put my $.02, (allowing for inflation) in on the proposed police station move. If it’s deemed necessary by the powers that be, then so be it.
Are you ready. Here comes the caveat. But, instead of moving it to a building that has the potential to be a stepping stone for a future industry, why not use an existing building that has no potential for a business of the industrial nature that is being offered to the city for FREE?
“Gee Russ, what building are you talking about?” Well here’s a hint. It is located along Sims Highway. It has a garage to park a patrol car. It has enough room for storage of documents and lost and found property. Along with enough room for interrogation. In fact enough room for temporary holding cells or to move the entire city government under one roof. Plenty of parking. A big enough room to hold the elections in or large city council meetings in during times of “hot button” topics. More than likely already wired for multiple phone lines and intercom. Also a loading dock for the recycling.
Give up? Uh, the old Morenci Hospital. If you guessed it give yourself an “atta boy.” Yes, it would probably require modifications to the bathrooms to make them more accessible. Yes, some division of the building would be needed for different departments. But the building is being offered for FREE.
If the city moved all of the offices under one roof then the sharing of responsibilities between city hall and the police department could continue. Kevin could have enough room to have an office along with room for paperwork that comes with his job.
“But golly, moving all of the city government along with modifying the inside of the building would cost money. Where’s that going to come from genius?” Um, by selling the existing buildings. The way I understand it there has been interest in the purchase in both the recycling center building and the police garage. Well, that only leaves the police station and city hall. Who knows, maybe someone could use those to start up the town’s very own internet service provider.....or a telephone company like Sand Creek.
