The Morenci Girls Basketball team battled hard Friday morning against the “HOPE Hoopsters” before a packed house at Adrian’s HOPE Community Center for disabled adults—final score Bulldogs 29, Hoopsters 34.
In all my years of supporting Morenci events, there has been no sweeter victory for the Bulldogs. Although the scoreboard showed otherwise, it was a huge win for Morenci students. As Hoopsters’ fans celebrated on the court and in the lobby after the final buzzer, the Morenci varsity team, Coach Jim Yatzek, and Morenci fans learned a great lesson from the experience, a lesson outside the realm of wins and losses.
In past weeks, members of the HOPE Center have come to Morenci to play kickball with the team and to cheer the Lady Dawgs to victory on the court. However, for most of the players, Friday was the big day.
On this day, a day when most county students were off for winter break, the girls made the road trip as visitors to the house of the Hoopsters. There they learned that there is more to life than the stressers of being a teenage student-athlete. There they learned meaningful life lessons, which will far outreach any trophy or accolade they may receive.
In the game of life, not all victories are measured by a final score. Congratulations to the Lady Dawgs and the Hoopsters for their achievements.
