2008.10.15 Mary Gautz: Prop. 2

Written by David Green. Posted in Letters

Proposal 2 is not a vote for life.  It destroys a viable embryo for experimentation.  For a long shot. It is a vote for “Let’s see what happens if we try this…”

Seventy meaningful, successful, proven treatments have come from adult stem cells. Embryonic experimentation, which has been going on for years, has yielded nothing but media hype and scientific conjecture. Money going to embryonic stem cell research will obviously NOT be directed to more promising and ethical sources: adult stem cells, umbilical cord blood stem cells and induced pluripotent stem cells. Induced pluripotent stem cells are skin cells that act like embryonic stem cells, but do not destroy an embryo. Focusing on embryonic stem cells could potentially move us farther from important  treatments and cures.

But we are lucky to have the resources, time and a forum to learn the facts, think for ourselves and have this discussion. It is too important not to.
