First it was Morenci’s girls team in 2011, fighting their way to the state semifinals. Next came the Bulldogs’ boys team that advanced all the way to the final contest in 2015.
This year it’s Fayette’s turn. The Eagle girls capped an impressive string of strong seasons by falling just a game short of Ohio’s semifinal contest last week.
What makes 2016 an incredible year in Fayette is that not only the girls but the boys, also, finished the regular season with a top-10 ranking.
The Eagle boys team is just a step behind the girls, hoping to move a step closer to Columbus by taking on the top-ranked team Tuesday night.
It can become discouraging to watch so many small-town schools lose to the parochial schools from larger cities and that happened with Fayette’s girls this year. Morenci’s boys had the thrill of toppling two strong parochial schools last season, but that’s often not the case.
With Morenci’s recent success and Fayette’s strong season this year, we say “hurrah” for small-town teams and home-grown talent. Standout seasons like these aren’t all that common for a small, rural school and when they arrive, it’s a special time for those on the team and everyone watching in the stands.
